Parent Leaders Push for Equity in Black Student Achievement and Special Education

Since 2016, we’ve built a diverse base of parents reflective of the students SFUSD serves, including Black families in the Bay View, middle-income families in Bernal Heights, and Spanish-speaking immigrant parents living in the Mission. We build parent leadership and work to connect families, elected officials and community leaders to work together to ensure San Francisco is a place that opens opportunity to all.

Parent Leadership Teams

Innovate is focused on unleashing the untapped power of local communities – the power of parents as co-educators and partners in advancing change, the power of educators to transform what schools can be, and the power of elected and community leaders to push for policies that support excellent public schools for all students. More than 49,000 students attend schools in the SanFrancisco Unified School district. During the 2021-22 school year, less than half met or exceeded Math standards. English standards were just as low, with 55%of SFUSD’s students meeting or exceeding standards. We are helping parents and families stay involved and informed so that they can advocate for their children and communities. Together, we are redefining how parents, schools, and community organizations can work together to transform public schools.

Black Student Achievement

There are more than three thousand black students in the San Francisco Unified School District. San Francisco parent leaders from Bayview-Hunters Point to the Mission, and Presidio are working together to ensure all students receive a high quality education, restorative justice, mental health services, and access to tutoring.

2023 parents leaders are focused on making sure school funding goes towards black students’ achievement. SF parents fought to ensure that $300 million of the governor’s budget goes towards learning gains in the black Community.

Our Parent Leaders are committed to ensuring SanFrancisco’s most underserved students have the resources they need to thrive in school and beyond.

Special Education (SPED)

In 2021, SF parents in the Mission noticed the lack of translation and interpretation services, especially for students with IEPS. They worked with the district to ensure change. In 2022, we collaborated with SFUSD to improve translation and interpretation services, positively impacting over 12,000 students across the district. Parent leaders continue to work with the district to ensure the translation and interpretation policy is properly implemented.

Join parents leaders as they continue to fight for high quality and equal education for all students.

San Francisco Parent Leaders Organize for Language Translation and Interpretation Accessibility Policy 5023

Key things you need to know.

On Tuesday, March 1, 2022, the San Francisco Unified School District adopted Policy 5023 to increase accessibility for translation and interpretation services in IEP meetings, Board meetings, Special Education Documents and more. Parents in California have the right to translation and interpretation services if 15% or more students speak a language other than English.
